SCEC SC10 Planning

This is the planning site for SCEC's SC10 meeting.

Draft M8 Presentation

M8 Animation Topics

Title: Ruptures to Rafters in Real-time:

Abstract: SCEC uses the TeraGrid supercomputers to study what might happen if there is a big earthquake in California. The SCEC supercomputer simulations help us understand what happens in the earth and on the earth during an earthquake.

Concept: Earthquake begins as video starts. Viewer’s location in a building in California is shown and video shows various 3D and 4D images as the event occurs with wave progressing towards the viewers location. Waves arrive and shake the structure the viewer is in. Closes with reminder to prepare and ways to contribute through sites like did you feel it and quake catcher projects.

The 3D and 4D nature of SCEC models and simulations give us good material for a 3D movie.

Surface Data: Surface coverings Topography Buildings Lidar resolution of faults

Sub-surface: fault geometries sedimentary basins hypocenters

Varying with Time: GPS Event catalog over several years

Fault rupture: Fault surface and friction laws Characteristic complex rupture Super shear mach cone

Wave propagation: from hypocenter to surface directivity of pulse wave guide basin amplifications

Sensors used to detect the earthquake: send in ground motions figure our where the earthquake is forecast warning ahead shakemaps showing intensity are produced Structure models affected by ground motions: Structures of different heights respond differently Same structure geographically close could experience very different motions Model could detect possible damage in real-structure before inspection could occur

3D viz of wave in basins: animation of surface waves and body waves

ShakeOut Practice:

  • Telecon 17 September 2010
  • M8 SC10 Planning: Friday 1:30-2:30pm

Proposed Agenda: 17 September

  1. What simulations remain to run
  2. Access issues to TG and INCITE
  3. M8 VShaker data and metadata we are preparing for Amit (is it what you expect and enough?)
  4. CVM-T update to new algorithm (Patrick has updated to Geoff's latest algorithm)
  5. M8 1Hz and 2Hz meshes (do we need one or both? How soon)
  6. M8 data on websims and scaling (should websims scale it?)
  7. M8 animations (I think we need at least three - full (I've been thinking maybe 368 seconds to match simulation time), ~1 min

Action Items:

  • Broadband completed and used with buildings
  • EEW sites
  • Site presentation
