SCEC taught me the importance of communication with peers and the public and forced me to come up with creative was to communicate facts and ideas, which has become the most valuable tool in my belt both professionally and personally.
Natalie Ballew first entered the UseIT program in 2009 and then loved the work so much that she decided to stay for the next year in 2010. The program was a great way to combine her interest in geology and filmmaking; she was able to use scientific thinking in a creative way to communicate to different groups of people about the importance of understanding earthquake science in potentially risky areas. The skills Natalie has learned while at SCEC of communication, team work, and collecting sound, fact-based information have stretched into her personal life and professional life. The work Natalie did with the Media Team in creating educational scientific videos is how she landed the job she is about to start in the Border Affairs division at TCEQ. Natalie is grateful to SCEC, UseIT, and Dr. Bob for creating the foundation for her to leap into the professional world.

Magali Barba first interned with SCEC as a rising sophomore in 2009. As an intern in the USEIT program, Magali used SCEC-VDO to develop visualizations showing the Bombay Beach Earthquake Swarm Sequence. The following summer as a SURE intern, Magali developed an Earthquake Early Warning Demonstration Tool to simulate the performance of an earthquake early warning system in California based on the τc-Pd (TauC-Pd) algorithm. During her second SURE internship in 2011, Magali created videos of seismic energy from earthquakes and active source shots arriving at NodalSeismic's 5000-station array and Salton Seismic Imaging Project's large array. She is currently interning with Signal Hill Petroleum/NodalSeismic where she continues to develop videos of earthquakes arriving at dense seismic networks.

The SCEC internship was my first and it exposed me to the research that goes into earthquake science. It has impacted me because I was able to learn from leading professionals and that challenged me to do more to understand and find solutions to engineering problems.
Saul Garcia was an SCEC USE-IT intern in the Summer of 2009. Saul worked with the video development team that helped develop and test features added to the SCEC-VDO program. His Interest are structural mechanics, architecture, and 3-D modeling. During the SCEC internship, Saul used the SCEC-VDO platform to make 3-D videos of earthquake events for the public. Saul used the knowledge he gained at SCEC to further his interest and apply it to other 3-D modeling and analysis software. After SCEC, Saul was accepted to work at the Center for Embedded Network Sensing (CENS) as a research intern for two consecutive summers(2010 and 2011). At CENS, he worked with PhD students on the structural mechanics of reinforced concrete shear walls during earthquake events. Saul's internship experience has provided insight into the work conducted in order to provide solutions to problems and publish those results.

Caroline Kim participated in the SCEC/UseIT internship in 2009. Caroline was recommended by her peers at PCC to join the SCEC internship. She worked on creating a regional promotion video for the Redwood Coast Tsunami Working Group with her fellow SCEC-VDO Production team members. Upon completion of the internship, Caroline was eligible to continue her undergraduate studies in physics at UC Berkeley.
