Jen joined SCEC as a junior in college in 2008. She was a developer of the SCEC-VDO program, as well as a lead on the SCEC-VDO visualization team. Jen was in the lucky intern class who actually got to experience a real earthquake, with Tom Jordan in the same room! Jen returned as a SCEC intern the following summer, working remotely from ASU, collaborating with ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UCSD to visually render 3D images from LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scans of various Southern California faults. During her senior year at ASU, Jen continued her work with SESE and turned that project into her senior project, where she recruited 5 other computer systems engineering students. During her tenure, Jen met a great group of people, most of whom she still keeps in contact with.

My experience at SCEC led me to continue my career in earthquake science at SCEC.
Scott Callaghan stumbled across a SCEC job posting online in Fall 2003 and applied. It turned out he had accidentally applied for a full-time job, but the intern program director contacted him and asked if he would be interested in an internship instead. Scott started working that fall and then was involved in the UseIT program in the summer of 2004. Scott has been at SCEC ever since - as a temp in 2005, then as a master's student 2005-2007, and full-time staff since January 2008.

Definitely. The SCEC internship introduced me to team based development on large scale software, and was the starting point for my professional career in CS.
Ryan started work as a developer on SCEC-VDO in the summer of 2008, creating new functionality that allowed displayed data to be filtered through user defined polygons. Ryan continued to work at SCEC throughout the next school year, developing an interactive application for displaying 4D earthquake shake data. During the summer of 2009, Ryan worked as a mentor to the intern class and developed a web application with the ability to display generated SCEC-VDO scenes. During his senior year, Ryan shifted his focus to computer networks and worked on a research project that had cell phones form adhoc networks in times of cell infrastructure failure, winning an honoroable mention in the Undergraduate Research Symposium. Ryan continued to study computer networks at the graduate level, and is still involved in emergency cell network research at USC today.

Yes. Met amazing friends, increased my knowledge about earthquakes and earthquake safety, developed skills in management and education.
Grace joined SCEC in 2008 as a Digital Products Assistant in the Outreach Programs Department, assisting in online publications and websites such as ShakeOut.org. She soon switched over to the Educations Programs Department and became a Communications, Education, and Outreach Assistant under Dr. de Groot. She was fortunate enough to be a part of the USEIT classes of 2009 and 2010 and helped in managing the summer internship programs, handling the logistical details and developing products such as the Intern Manual. Since graduating from USC, she has become a law student at UCLA and hopes to one day work for a non-profit in environmental protection.
