Of course! Most internship programs help develop teamwork, leadership skills, and networking contacts.
Brittney Miller first entered the SCEC program during the summer of 2008. She was the team leader for the Digital Library group which worked alongside the USC Libraries to create metadata for SCEC documents. Brittney was interested in gaining experience in various fields of study and learning more about her Southern California roots, and SCEC provided an excellent opportunity to not only become more educated about earthquakes, but to spread awareness about earthquake preparedness in the community. She has since graduated from USC with a B.S. in Mathematics and Physics and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Purdue University where she is a teaching assistant.

I think it was the first time I ever felt like research was really possible for me. I got a better sense of what makes a problem worth researching. Additionally, attending the SCEC annual meeting was incredible. I have yet to see a field as well organized.
Javier participated in the USEIT internship in the summer of 2008. As a computer science and math major at Rutgers University, he helped to develop and improve SCEC-VDO. This internship allowed him to realize the importance of research in solving problems. He now does research constantly in his PhD studies at UC Berkeley and for his consulting job at PowerHive.
