Color Map Maker

The Colored Map Maker is a new feature in SCEC-VDO that allows users to create and customize colored maps.  This map maker can create a colored map out of any set of data, as long as each point in that set contains a longitude, latitude, and some value to be mapped.  Users can display a map with up to 10 colors, and these colors can be displayed discretely or as a gradient.  The user can also color the map using the CPT object which is the default for shake maps and was the old method of coloring all maps in SCEC-VDO.

Earthquake Catalog Plugin - Use Discrete Coloring Checkbox

The Earthquake Catalog plugin is a very useful interface within SCE-VDO. Because the plugin is well used, Development Team 1 emphasized making improvements to the Earthquake Catalog.  Besides implementing a parser for the UCERF3 catalog, the Development Team 1 also gave this plugin the ability to allow users to assign discrete colors to earthquake magnitudes. Before this improvement, users only had the choice to use one color for all earthquakes, or they could use a gradient of two colors. With the new updated version, users have no limit to how many colors they can use. Since the user can assign a custom color to each magnitude range of their choice, the possibilities are infinite. This addition makes it easier to visualize and distinguish different earthquake magnitudes.

Felzer Catalog Importer/Parser

SCEC-VDO now has the capability to import, parse, and display the new Felzer/UCERF3 historical earthquake catalog which contains data back to 1769. The importer and parser works in the same manner from a user perspective as importing and filtering any of the existing catalogs that are supported by the SCEC-VDO Earthquake Catalog Plugin.

General Earthquake Catalog Importer

This development of the earthquake catalog plugin gives SCEC-VDO the ability to import a general catalog from the user's hard drive. It takes in the location of the data in the file from the user and will format and order according to SCEC-VDO format so it can be displayed by the earthquake plugin.

GIS Counties/Roads shape file importer + updated data

The capability to for a user to import their own shapefiles not included in SCEC-VDO was added to the GIS Counties, Roads and Highways plugin. Additionally, updated county and road data was added to the plugin.

Gutenberg-Richter Relation (Magnitude-frequency Distribution)

The Earthquake Statistics class calculates the magnitude-frequency distribution of a catalog of earthquakes and compares it to the Gutenberg-Richter law. Utilizing the Earthquake Catalog Plugin, the data from a given catalog of earthquakes that is filtered and displayed in SCEC-VDO is extracted and manipulated to find and plot its magnitude-frequency distribution. Earthquakes are divided into two groups: one group of earthquakes precedes the maximum magnitude event and the other group follows it; the number 'b' in Gutenberg and Richter's law is calculated from both groups of earthquakes by the equation b =a - log10NM. The number 'b' for the earthquakes greater than an input threshold magnitude is calculated for an entire catalog being displayed. A table displays the incremental and cumulative distribution of magnitude-frequency for these earthquakes. The incremental and cumulative magnitude-frequency distribution of the earthquakes is plotted on a graph. The class is useful for testing the validity or completeness of a series of earthquakes in a given catalog.

Legend Plugin - Create Legend Button

The new Create Legend button found in the Legend plugin opens a new user-friendly interface that gives users the ability to quickly create a legend for their SCEC-VDO project.  This interface includes many useful features such as custom size, color, and background transparency. Once users finish designing their legend, they then have the ability to save the legend as a png file. The user can then import the image directly into their project with a push of a button. This feature not only eliminates frustration, but it also saves time.

New Orthoimagery WMS capability + Surface Plugin interface improvements

SCEC-VDO has been updated with a new Web Mapping Service(WMS) to download orthoimagery files from the internet. These images are pulled from the U.S. National Agriculture Imagery Program which provides high resolution aerial photographs of the entire United States. This WMS service has replaced NASA-JPL’s Blue Marble WMS which was taken offline from public access.

The Surface Plugin user interface was also updated to increase user accessibility.

Population Density plugin importer and updated data

We created a referencing tool to assist the user in color and statistical breakdown. The legend GUI (graphic user interface) was designed to link discrete colors to their appropriate data block. Data can displayed in ascending and descending order and the legend GUI can also be saved as an image. The image can be used for presentations and video visualizations. 

Users had a very limited reach when it came to density data so the team added several checkboxes(named: import shapefile 1-4) that allowed the users to import resources/data from external sources.

Seismic Hazard Map Plugin

The Seismic Hazard Map plugin allows the user to generate and display colored maps from Seismic Hazard data found on the USGS website or other sources.  The user can customize the map's transparency, height, magnitude threshold, and colors.  There is a tutorial located in the source code folder detailing how to add more data to this plugin.
